This piece was a proof of concept for a series of straight blade athame workshops. It needed to be simple enough that someone with no smithing experience could make it, but also be unique and personal. The runes I chose from the Elder Futhark were Ansuz and Tiwaz on one side, and Fehu and Uruz on the other.
The rune Ansuz (pronounced “ahn-sooze”) translates to a god, ancestral god (sometimes interpreted as Odin). Ansuz is often associated with communication, wisdom, divine power, a message, inspiration.
The rune Tiwaz (pronounced “tee-wahz”) translates to the god Tyr. Tiwaz is often associated with courage, victory, strength, passion, healing, willpower.
The rune Fehu (pronounced "fey-who") translates to cattle, wealth, money. Fehu is often associated with wealth, prosperity, abundance, reward, good health, beginnings.
The rune Uruz (pronounced “oo-rooze”) translates to Aurochs, brute strength. Uruz is often associated with strength, health, power, energy, endurance, creative force.
